Low Glycemic Index

How quickly blood sugar increases in response to what we eat is Gl. In other words, food should digest slowly. Foods with GI of 55 and less is digested slowly - with gradual increase in blood glucose level. Food with higher GI ( >70) caused rapid increase in blood glucose levels causing havoc to the system.

CALORIES
We normally look at the calorie number and make decision about the food. It is not really good way to access. Instead check for the components that make the calorie. Calorie = ( Carbohydrates * 4) + ( Protein * 4) + ( Fat * 9) - Ensure carb is derived from complex carbohydrates, protein and good fats ( meaning unsaturated fats found in nuts and seeds).


WHOLE GRAINS

Whole grains offer a “complete package” of health benefits, unlike refined grains, which are stripped of valuable nutrients in the refining process. So, at the high level, avoiding refined grains would mean we are eating wholegrains. 


All whole grain kernels contain three parts: the bran, germ, and endosperm. Each section houses health-promoting nutrients. Refined gains contain only endosperm.


PROTEIN

Protein is well known to us all. It is amino acids that make the building blocks of protein. There are 20 amino acids that make protein. Protein that has all 20 amino acids are known as complete protein. Whey Protein - is one example of complete protein containing all 20 amino acids. While, plant protein are not complete - they lack few amino acids.

As per the study, an average adult should consume 0.8 to 1 gm of his or her body weight as protein. For example, someone with 80kg of weight would require 80gm of protein per day.

BIO AVAILABILITY

This seems like a high scientific word - which most of us don't get to understand well. Almond has about 22% protein. Let us say I eat 100g of almond. It does not mean my body absorbed 22g of protein in that process. May be only 13g of protein is absorbed and rest came out as waste. The amount of protein (in this case) our body can absorb is called bio availability.

 

WHAT ARE ANTI-NUTRIENTS?

Opposite of what nutrients do. The compounds found in plants that can interfere and obstruct the nutrients such as protein from getting absorbed into the body.

LECTINS

This is one of the anti-nutrient found in seeds, legumes and grains. While seeds, legumes and grains are great for us, lectin present in there can cause trouble. One of the easiest way to get rid of lectins is to wash and spout the seeds. It will eliminate the lectins

RESTING HEART RATE

Check your heartrate in the morning before getting up from the bed. It is your resting heart rate. Lower the better. Lower resting heart rate means, our body can pump blood efficiently without putting too much effort. Such heart tends to last long.


How to achieve it? No There are no medicine for that. Lead a active life. Athletes tend to have very low resting heart rate.
