Our liver produces cholesterol and sends those all over the body through blood. If we have more cholesterol than required, it is going to keep roaming around in the blood and eventually going to get stuck to the blood vessel walls. If we don't take care of it for long time, these are going to block the blood flow. Then all the trouble starts!

Most of you would know high cholesterol is bad for us. But can we survive without cholesterol? Answer is simple NO. We need cholesterol to survive. It contributes to the structure of every cell in the body. High cholesterol is bad but right level is required.

LET US UNDERSTAND THE FUNDAMENTALS IN SIMPLE TERMS

What can we do to make sure that we have right levels of it? It appears that, by virtue of normal human function, we are designed to have right level of Cholesterol. But most of us do not let our body live normal human function. We eat bad things, don't get to do normal days physical hard work and keep dumping trash in our body.

Let me explain little more on what this normal human function is. I am going to sound like a rotten old record player. Eat balanced food. Eat between 2000 to 2500 Cal food and spend that calorie by doing physical activity. Don't sit before that television all day and see how others live. Let us live our lives. It is that simple. But simple explanations do not bode well. Let me go few steps further to understand the mechanism behind how our body manages Cholesterol.

WHERE IS IT PRODUCED?

Our body has a machine inside that is designed to produce cholesterol. It is called liver. Liver produces right level of cholesterol. It we eat high saturated fats and trans-fat (bakery foods and other junk), liver is triggered to produce more Cholesterol than what is required.

Some foods have high amount of Cholesterol in it. Any living animal with liver would be producing cholesterol for its own use, If we eat those animals (liver of lamb, fatty beef for example), it is going to impact our cholesterol level significantly.

Step One towards lower Cholesterol is to avoid food that has direct cholesterol in it or the fats (Saturated Fat and trans-fat ), Let us avoid trans-fat completely and moderate Saturated Fats ) that can trigger our liver to make more Cholesterol.

WHAT IS LIVER DOING WITH CHOLESTEROL?

Total cholesterol in your body has three segments.

(1) HDL Cholesterol

(2) LDL Cholesterol

(3) Triglycerides

HDL is called good cholesterol and LDL is called bad one. HDL job is to go all over the blood vessels and bring all the left-over excess cholesterol back to the liver where it can be processed and expelled as waste from our body.

LDL Cholesterol on the other hand, if we have more of it, it will roam around as lawless militant and eventually get stuck the blood vessel walls. This eventually will cause blocks in blood vessel that might lead to heart attack, stroke or high blood pressure.

SO, WHAT DO WE DO?

You need to have more HDL and less LDL. If we do, then blood flow will be clean. LDL will not be messing up the blood flow. It requires discipline to increase HDL and indiscipline to increase LDL.

Well balanced food (nuts, seeds, wholegrains, fresh vegetables and fruits) that is zero in trans-fat, low in saturated fat along with good physical exercise (running, jogging, swimming, playing intense games) will increase the HDL

All the above, will also reduce your LDL

Next time, when you buy any product (claiming to be nutritious), just read the ingredients. If you do not understand the ingredients, most likely you are looking at a junk food. Avoid it.

Control cholesterol, and we can control most of the lifestyle diseases.

Beauty in living is all about having a healthy life. Billions of dollars will not give back the healthy body we once had.

Let us set our priorities right

Quote: The most important dietary link to blood cholesterol is the type of fat eaten - not the amount of cholesterol in food. In our fast-paced modern lives, it is easy to rely on heavily processed foods that clog our systems—much like the kitchen pipe analogy we discussed earlier. But the antidote to modern lifestyle stressors often lies in ancient dietary wisdom.

Harnessing the Power of Traditional Superfoods

Managing your heart health doesn't mean turning to restrictive, joyless diets. Instead, it’s about returning to whole, unrefined foods that naturally assist your body's filtering systems:

The Ultimate Pipe Cleaners (Dietary Fiber & Whole Grains): Traditional grains like Pearl Millet (Bajra) are packed with soluble fiber. This fiber acts like a sponge in your digestive tract, binding to excess cholesterol and pulling it out of the body before it can enter your bloodstream. Incorporating a comforting bowl of Pearl Millet Ganji into your routine is an effortless, time-tested way to keep your arteries clean and your digestion smooth.

The Good Fats (Nuts & Seeds): Your body needs fat to thrive, but the type of fat matters. Swapping out refined oils for traditional sources of healthy unsaturated fats - like almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and sesame seeds -works wonders for your lipid profile. These nutrient-dense powerhouses actively help raise your "good" HDL cholesterol, which acts as a clean-up crew to sweep away the "bad" LDL.

By embracing these nutrient-dense, traditional ingredients, you aren't just managing a number on a lab report - you are honoring a philosophy of efficient, natural nutrition. Your heart works around the clock for you; feed it the ancient fuel it was designed to thrive on.

Root cause of lot of our lifestyle diseases is the rampant consumption of simple carbs also called fast foods.

So, WHAT IS MUESLI?

A minimally-processed mix of whole grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and spices, muesli was first created at the turn of the 20th century by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner as a healthful dietary supplement for his patients. It was an Olympic distance event where I first swam 1.5 km in the ocean, and then cycled for 40 km. It ended with 10 km of running on a hot, sunny day. This is my second consecutive year at GOA for this event. I took 3 hours and 39 minutes to cross the finish line.

The attitude of athletes who are into endurance sports is infectious. They are highly competitive, but simultaneously exude positivity and graciousness. All what you would want in a corporate environment, don’t you think? Mostly they complete with themselves - not with someone else. The endurance sport arena is where age is just a number - with no meaning whatsoever.

Endurance sport is a transformative and meditative game of the mind and body working together in symphony. The human body is an amazing machine capable of doing amazing feats – only if the driver of that machine determines to drive it as it deserves to be driven.

So, what is this transformative, meditative game all about? Crossing of the finish line is just a part of the overall scheme of things. It is the journey that matters more. It is the rigor of disciplined preparation and understanding of our own fragility. Methods to cope with those fragilities is what makes this sport more significant.

It is easy to give up – after all, 1.5 km swimming and 40 km cycling at around 30kmph speed is enough to tire out the common man. It is easy to give up running when your body is screaming with pain. So what do you do?

Endurance athletes thrive on the ability to talk to their minds and have that long conversation with themselves. It is the three plus hours of solitary time – rather, it is the silence that is deafening.

It is the difficult things we have done which make us learn more about our resilience. It is the time to convince the mind that what is difficult is possible – only 8 more kilometres to run! It can’t be difficult – one stride at a time!

It’s time to convince the body that it has got the energy- confidence is the energy. A confident mind exudes positive energy.

It’s time to feel the wind blowing on that sweaty face because I am running so fast!

While training for swimming English Channel, we as team undertook several expeditions into the sea. One of the events was a 5km sea swimming event off the GOA coast. The event was badly organized. Organizers put several buoys with flag on it but they did not anchor it well – 30 minutes into the swim, they all floated away!

We had to swim 2.5 km straight into the sea and return back. Once you swim so far into the sea, you can hardly see the shore. Two kilometres into the sea, I lost my swim orientation in the absence of any markers! In the massive waters, I was trying to see the target point on a foggy morning with no other human nearby!

That was the day, the strength of my mind and the hard work of my training destroyed my fear of adversity in the middle of the ocean. I started enjoying the push and pull of the tide and loved being part of that massive beast. There are some wonderful views one must see from the middle of the ocean with water to the eye level. Only sea swimmers know that!

When I was swimming in an area called the ‘Separation Zone’ in the English Channel, I saw a few jelly fishes. They looked light brown, umbrella shaped, just hanging in the water. I kept swimming. Just a couple of meters away, I saw thousands of jellyfish layer after layer deep in the water, as far as my eyes can see! I was startled – these things sting and are very painful! I tried to get away – but there was nowhere else to go.

And then I started enjoying the sight of these little creatures – yes, they were pricking me - yet, the school of jellyfishes presented their own enjoyable pattern. It is the virtue of mind and body at peace working together making all the adventures we do worthwhile.

It is a beautiful world, and we are blessed to live in it. Be it the natural beauty of vast expanse of water, or the long stretch of cycling or running trial on those beautiful snow-capped mountains waiting to be scaled, it is all there for us to experience fully. It takes an effort of the mind and body to be at harmony to generate the abundance of confidence and positivity.

Life indeed is beautiful! Good luck!

Protein is nothing but set of 20 (or 21) amino acids. These are the building blocks of life.

If sufficient amount of protein is not consumed, it could lead to malnutrition and hence it is very critical for our well-being. Apart from protein, body also requires two other macro nutrients (1) Fats (2) Carbohydrates. All the three in the right proportion is essential.

For a normal adult, getting sufficient amount of fat and carbohydrate is seldom an issue. They may not get the right type of fat and carbohydrates. But that is for a different blog.

The best source of protein always is through our regular food – breakfast – lunch and dinner. Protein sources typically are nuts, seeds, pulses and wholegrains. Nuts and Seeds have higher protein content while wholegrains have lower protein content. Wholegrains serve as complex carbohydrates. Pulses serve as a source of protein as well as complex carbohydrates. A well-balanced nutritious food is always a better option to get sufficient amount of protein.

If you can get 55g of protein every day, there is no need for protein in the form of any supplements. Protein bars are a supplemental source of protein. Depending on what the daily food consumption pattern is, getting 55g through regular food is actually not very easy but not an impossible task. It takes good level of effort in making right food choices.

But not everyone is normal. Some of us are athletic – amateur or not. I have started training for a sports event and my schedule currently involves the following. (About 30 to 50km Running per week – With Sundays 16 to 21 Km), strength training three times a week. One day of cycling. Swimming will start pretty soon.

My protein requirements are not 55. I require about 70g to 85g per day and as the intensity increases, more protein would be required. This number can vary for each person. Getting an additional 15 to 20g is a major challenge.

Protein, for athletes, is critical for building, recovering and repairing the muscles. Consuming one protein bar with 20g protein can help to obtain the deficit protein easily.

I am not suggesting that non athletes should not consume protein bars. I simply believe that athletes have the actual requirement to consume. Let us start looking beyond the marketing noise!

Next question is how to get quality protein bars. There are several ways to identify.

(1) Ensure that all the ingredients are something you can understand – Overly chemical looking names are a big warning sign. Too many ingredients are also not necessary. Also avoid ingredients such as BROWN RICE SYRUP, PALM KERNEL OIL, VEGETABLE GLYCERIN, Maltitol to name a few. These have no nutritional value and can be harmful for the body.

(2) I would avoid products with artificial sweeteners. – brands use that to show less calorie in the label since the artificial sweeteners are zero/low in carbohydrates and hence low in calorie. If you are active and athletic, what is the harm in consuming carbohydrates as long as it is well within the requirements? How do we know artificial sweeteners are not harming us? Sadly, artificial sweeteners have become a marketing ploy.

(3) Ensure that the product has at least 8g of dietary fibre for each serving of 20g protein. The only foreign looking name you can tolerate in the ingredient list is Fructo Oligosaccharides. To digest the protein, fibre plays a critical role. Fructo Oligosaccharides also called prebiotics and are created from plant (sugarcane or Chicory or Corn) by the process of fermentation. Consumption of protein without sufficient fibre may cause constipation. These are gut friendly and provides various health benefits. But always remember moderation is the key.

(4) Finally, check for the quality of the protein. Many products use Soy / Pea protein. When I consume protein as a supplement, I would prefer it to be easy to digest and high in quality. While nothing wrong about Soy/Pea, they are not complete protein. Their bio availability is low. It means, if you consume 20 of Pea protein, body may not absorb all of it.

One of the best forms of protein available and ideally suited as a supplement is Whey. Unlike Soy/Pea, it is a complete protein with all amino acids and its bioavailability is much higher than 100.

While Whey in simple form (Whey Protein Concentrate) is good, Whey Isolate is the purest form of whey available. Cost of Whey Isolate is about twice that of What Protein Concentrate. Cost of Whey Protein Concentrate is twice compared to Soy/Pea Protein.

So, next time when you buy a protein bar, please keep these facts in to consideration

If you ever searched for a protein product in the web, you would get flooded with advertisements for protein powders, protein bar or any product with the name protein in it. The problem today is not the existence or non-existence of good products. The identification of the same.

One possible way customers can safeguard themselves is to acquire knowledge and make the choices suitable to them.

Do you need protein on a daily basis? If so, what be your source of protein? And what type of proteins are suitable? When should we consume the same?

Building a good healthy lifestyle, takes effort. We can choose not to take that effort and pay a heavy price later in life. Protein is made up of amino acids. Human body requires 21 amino acids. Any protein that is made up of 21 amino acids is called a complete protein.

We need protein for growth as well as to maintain muscle mass. In short, we need protein for survival. This is a very important stuff. But are we getting enough?

First, an average adult requires about 56 grams of protein in any given day. This is as per the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) guidelines. Are we getting that on a daily basis? A typical average Indian may get up to 30g per day (there are exceptions) even if the food habit is healthy. Even for a non-vegetarian, the numbers are not going to shoot up dramatically.

Therefore, supplementing protein is definitely a good idea. While fat (good or bad) and carbohydrates are available in plenty, getting daily requirement of protein through regular diet is a challenge.

What is Whey Protein?
Whey is a product of milk. Let us take a simple example of milk getting converted to curd. If you leave it overnight, solid part and water gets separated. The almost clear water on top is called Whey water. Whey water is Protein. The solids in the bottom contain different type of protein called casein protein.

Casein protein is what you get from eating Cheese /Paneer.

Whey water is dried to the powder form. The powdered whey water is called whey protein concentrate. Whey protein is a complete protein with all the amino acids.

What is Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)?
Whey Protein Concentrate is the product of dried whey water. It is typically 80% protein and rest of the 20% are mostly impurities such as lactose, fat and carbohydrate.

What is Whey Isolate (WPI)?
Let us take Whey Protein Concentrate and purify it by removing the impurities such as lactose, fat and carb as much as possible. The output is Whey Protein Isolate. This gives anywhere from 90 to 95% protein. Lot of us are lactose intolerant. Whey Isolate is best fit for those with such issues. Whey Isolate is expensive. It is the purest form of Whey Protein available.

What is Whey Hydrolysate (WPH)?
WPC as well as WPI are both needs to be digested after consuming. WPH is a special form of protein which is already in the digested form (it smells kind of bad its natural odor). The absorption is much faster. It is not uncommon for doctors to prescribe this to patients who are compromised in their digestive capabilities for various reasons.

What is Bio - Availability?
Bio availability means the ability of our body to absorb the nutrients. Nutrient in this case is protein. For example, 100g of Almond would have about ~20g of protein. Fact that you have consumed 100g of almond does not necessarily mean your body got 20g of protein. Not all the protein is available for the body to absorb.

At best, 12 to 15g of protein will be absorbed and the rest will be wasted. This is called bio availability

Whey Protein has highest bio availability possible. It means, if you consume 20g of Whey Protein, your body will be able to absorb all the 20g of protein. This makes Whey a very efficient protein for everyone including athletes. It helps them to recover after hard work out.

Who can consume protein supplements?
Most of us require protein in the form of supplements. It is very hard to achieve daily protein requirement through our regular diet. Supplementing protein through protein bar or protein powder is a good idea. While at it, drink a lot of fluids.

For sports people, it is ideal to consume post workout. The absorption level is at optimum level for your muscles after the swim, or run or gym activity. Protein helps to heal the muscle tears and, in that process, helps build strong muscles.

Next job is to identify good products from bad ones.

The products, customers and sustainability become centre stage. You tend to tune out the noise and start thinking intuitively on product, process and quality.

For starters, moving away from slogans and start focusing on addressing real problems/gaps is first. Who got what funding; how much they are selling on amazon; which actress is endorsing who are pure nonsense and noise. Everything comes with a cost. I know of brands that spend 2 lakh each day on amazon ads to get revenue of 3 lakh each day with deep discounts. Customer acquisition cost are horrendous!

Revenue we make, for starters has to be sustainable. Non sustainable revenues are toxic eventually kill the companies. There are very little we can get from the peer group of companies these days because most of them are not worried about growing up but focusing on getting adopted by some rich company.

Establishing and leaving behind a great company requires life time of commitment but it has to be built on simple principles. As simple as - focus on product and customers day in and day out. It is going to take time. A marathon runner never sprints – his energy is limited – it is the art of conserving energy in a sustainable way.
